Music, in our ever-changing society, reveals the most genuine aspects of humanity and brings hope to people in times of hardship.
I grew up in Taichung City and began my musical journey at the age of six with the piano. At nine, I discovered the double bass. Despite it being much taller than I was, I was determined to learn this unique instrument. Now, more than a decade later, I’m still playing it. The journey has been challenging, but the experiences and joy I've gained from music are priceless and everlasting.
I graduated from Taichung Second Senior High School. Growing up in a music talent program, I spent countless hours in practice rooms perfecting my skills, unknowingly losing my connection with the world outside. In college, I had the opportunity to perform in hospitals, nursing homes, and orphanages. When I played music, nursing home residents sang along, patients in treatment gradually relaxed, and children listened attentively. The power of music was undeniable — it dissolved barriers between people and comforted their pain and anxieties. This inspired me to step out of the practice room and use my abilities to bring about positive change in society.
Not everyone has the same resources and supportive family that I had. After visiting some rural elementary schools, I saw many children eager to learn music but forced to give up due to a lack of resources. I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to learn music and wish for every child to have the same chance to experience its beauty. After seeing this, I determined to found the Taiwan Music Outreach Association, with the aim of providing more learning resources for children while giving back to the land that nurtured me.
Lastly, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to Li Fang and Pei Chien, my two friends, for building this project with me from the ground up. I also want to thank every member of the association, every volunteer teacher, partner school, and all of you who are willing to support this initiative. Together, through these collective acts of kindness and warmth, I believe we can spread music to every corner of Taiwan, allowing children to experience the joy of learning and the beauty of music!
Sincerely,
Yu Yang
